Earthquakes occur when the tectonic plates crash together. The tectonic plates are made out of rock and are so big that most of Australia is on 1 plate. There are three types of earthquakes. Strike-slip, Normal and thrust. These different types occur by the way the tectonic plates move. The strike up moves the land side ways and makes everything move to the side. A normal earthquake happens more often out of the three. This one happens by the ground shifting down and making holes and imperfections in the land. The last earthquake is thrust this one occurs by moving the land up and making big mountains in the middle of the road. The image above is a building from the 2010 Chile earthquake. This building was ripped apart from the 8.8 magnitude earthquake. By this image you can tell how strong the energy from the tectonic plates are.
This picture shows the toppled buildings in Taiwan in 1999. Many lives were lost and a lot of money was spent to clear and rebuild these buildings.
Earthquakes can arise anywhere and anytime, but there are a few places that don't get them often or even at all. If you want to learn about earthquakes use the links above to read about earthquakes.
